Firelight – Flickering Torches, Campfires & Other Fires

Firelight

Flickering firelight for Minecraft. Torches, lanterns, candles, campfires and fire make the light around them dip and flare softly, each flame on its own rhythm, on the ground, the walls and the mobs nearby.

Firelight is a small client-side mod for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge. Nothing needs to be installed on the server, and Fabric API is not needed. It works with Sodium and Embeddium.

Compatible with Iris and Oculus shaders.

What flickers

• Torches – torches, soul torches, copper torches and wall torches.
• Lanterns – lanterns and jack o’lanterns. Their glass keeps the flicker calm.
• Candles – lit candles and candle cakes.
• Campfires and fire – these flicker the most.
• Furnaces – lit furnaces, smokers and blast furnaces glow with a slow pulse.
• Mobs and players – anything standing near a flame flickers along with the ground under it, dropped items and chests included.

Every flame has its own rhythm, so two torches side by side never flicker in step.

Built to stay fast

The flicker runs in the terrain shader, so no chunks are ever rebuilt when the light changes. There is no measurable frame rate cost.

Supported versions

Install

Fabric: put the Fabric Firelight jar for your version in your mods folder. Add Mod Menu to get the settings screen (Mods > Firelight > Configure).

NeoForge and Forge: put the Firelight jar for your loader and version in your mods folder. No other mods are needed. The settings screen is in Mods > Firelight > Config.

Settings

Settings are saved in config/firelight.json.

Notes

• On Forge 1.20.1 with Embeddium, Embeddium writes a line to the log saying a mod changed its internals. That is Firelight adding the flicker to Embeddium’s terrain shader; it is harmless.
