Anvilwise – Book Merge Planner & Enchantment Guide

Anvilwise ends “Too Expensive!” surprises. At any anvil it works out the cheapest order to combine your gear and enchanted books, shows the XP cost of every step, and can do all the merges for you with one click. A searchable Enchantment Guide shows what each enchantment does, where it goes and what it conflicts with, and for any item, every enchantment it can take.

What you’ll see

At an anvil

• A side panel next to the anvil. Pick the item to enchant from your inventory, and every enchanted book you carry is listed.
• Cheapest order: Anvilwise tries the possible merge orders and shows the one with the lowest total XP: each step’s left slot, right slot, result and level cost, plus the total.
• Too Expensive warning when a step would cost 40 levels or more, so you know before you start.
• Pick your books: click a book to include or skip it. Books that conflict with the item or with each other, or that add nothing, are marked.

• Prior work penalty of the item is shown and taken into account.
• Quick Merge: click to do the next step, or shift-click to do every step. Anvilwise only does the clicks you would do yourself, and stops safely when you run out of levels, your inventory is full, an item is missing or you close the anvil.

The Enchantment Guide (press N, or the Enchantment Guide button on the panel)

It has two tabs. Clicking an item icon in the Enchants tab opens that item in the Items tab, and clicking an enchantment in the Items tab opens it in the Enchants tab.

Enchants tab

• Every enchantment in the game, including ones added by datapacks, in one searchable list.
• What it does, its max level and its anvil cost per level (from an item or from a book).
• Goes on: the items it can be applied to.
• Can’t be combined with: every enchantment it conflicts with.
• Fits my item: Yes shows only enchantments that can go on the item you’re holding.

Items tab

• Pick any item, or search for it by name. The enchantable items you carry come first.
• Every enchantment it can take, at its max level.
• Clashes in orange: enchantments that can’t go together on that item (like Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods) are orange, and the tooltip names what they clash with.

Settings

There are no settings screens. The keybind Open Enchantment Guide (default N) is under the Anvilwise category in Controls. Mod Menu on Fabric, or the Config button in the Mods list on Forge and NeoForge, also opens the guide.
