Don’t Open The Door

Every night, someone knocks. Check your Visitor Log. Not everyone at the door is who they say they are.

When the sun goes down, villagers come to your door begging to be let in. Some of them are exactly who they say they are. Some of them are wearing a villager.

Open the door to the right ones and they’ll pay you at dawn. Open it to the wrong one and you’ll see what it really looks like.

How it works

• You get a Visitor Log. Every evening it lists who is expected tonight, by name and trade.
• After dark, they knock. Three rounds of knocking and begging, and breathing on the other side of the door. Then they give up.
• Look before you open. Every fake gets exactly one thing wrong:
  • Black eyes: no whites at all
  • The grin: a mouth full of teeth
  • Too tall: it has to stoop
  • No nose: the face is flat where the nose should be
  • The tilt: its head hangs to one side, listening
  • Not expected: the name isn’t in your log tonight
  • No shadow: it doesn’t cast one (later nights)
  • Misspelled: one letter off from someone on the list (later nights)
• Let a real one in and they stay till morning and pay you: emeralds, food, supplies, and sometimes a diamond.
• Leave a real one outside and in the morning, nobody has seen them since.
• Open the door to a fake and it unfolds into one of five things, with a jumpscare:
  • The Tall One: starved and sprinting
  • The Crawler: low and fast on all fours
  • The Drowned: pulls itself up out of the ground
  • The Mannequin: only moves when you aren’t looking at it
  • The Pale One: smooth, faceless, and walks straight at you
• Every night is worse: more visitors, more fakes, and quieter tells. Your log remembers every tell you’ve found.
• No sleeping through it. You can’t sleep while someone is still coming.

Tips

• Build a window next to your door. You’ll want to see who’s there.
• Hit something through a window and if it’s a fake, it shows itself early. Hit a real visitor and you’ve killed someone.
• Mimics burn away at sunrise. If one gets in, survive until morning.

Commands (operators)

• /dontopen knock <real|black_eyes|grin|tall|no_nose|head_tilt|not_on_list|no_shadow|wrong_name> makes someone knock right now. Great for recording.
• /dontopen night <n> jumps to night n.

Config

config/dontopen-common.toml sets the most visitors per night, mimic damage, how long visitors knock, and jumpscares on/off.

Details

• Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge
• Install on both client and server
• Works in singleplayer and multiplayer. Each player gets their own visitors at their own door.
• Nothing spawns naturally. Visitors only come to a player who is indoors at night, near a wooden door.
