The Grumpy Banker

Money comes to Minecraft! Earn credits, find banknotes hidden in chests, and do business with the grumpiest villager in town. He won’t smile, but he will buy your spare iron and sell you a diamond sword, if you can afford it.

💰 What You Get

  • A credits currency. Your balance is saved with your player, stays with you when you die, and works in single-player and on servers.
  • A Banker villager. A brand-new villager job, with his own look and name tag.
  • A Safe block. A sturdy metal Safe that turns an unemployed villager into a Banker.
  • A trading screen. Search and scroll through over 130 items, and buy or sell any of them with one click.
  • Banknotes in chests. Four kinds of credit notes are hidden in loot chests all over the world.
  • A banknote on your screen. A little banknote in the corner of your screen always shows how many credits you have.

🏦 Getting Started

  1. Craft a Safe. Put a chest in the centre of the crafting grid and surround it with 8 iron ingots.
  2. Place the Safe near a villager who doesn’t have a job yet.
  3. He’ll claim it and become a Banker. You’ll know because his name appears above his head.
  4. Right-click the Banker to open his trading screen.

The Safe faces you when you place it, and you need a pickaxe to mine it back up.

🛒 Trading With the Banker

The Banker’s screen shows every item he deals in, with two prices next to each one:

Column What it means
SELL How many credits the Banker pays you for one of that item
BUY How many credits the Banker charges you for one
  • Click a price to make the trade, one item at a time.
  • Type in the search box to find an item quickly, then scroll with the mouse wheel or drag the scrollbar.
  • A bell and a white flash tell you a trade worked. A grumpy buzz and a red flash tell you it didn’t, usually because you’re short of credits or don’t have the item.
  • If your inventory is full, the item you bought drops at your feet, so you never lose it.
  • Esc leaves the search box and pressing it again closes the screen. Your inventory key (E) closes it too.

While you’re trading, the Banker stops and faces you. He’ll only serve one customer at a time!

📦 What the Banker Trades

More than 130 items across every part of the game, including:

  • Ores and minerals. Iron, gold, copper, coal, redstone, lapis, emeralds, diamonds, quartz, amethyst
  • Food. Bread, cooked meats and fish, stews, cake, golden carrots, golden apples
  • Tools and weapons. Iron and diamond tools, bows, crossbows, arrows, shields, tridents
  • Armour. Full leather, iron and diamond sets
  • Potions. Healing, Regeneration, Fire Resistance, Night Vision, Water Breathing, Swiftness, Strength, Slow Falling, Invisibility
  • Brewing and mob drops. Blaze rods, ghast tears, ender pearls, phantom membranes, slime balls and more
  • Useful blocks. Anvils, enchanting tables, brewing stands, ender chests, shulker boxes, lodestones
  • Rare treasures. Heart of the Sea, Nautilus Shells, Echo Shards, Bottles o’ Enchanting

He also has some very special stock for wealthy customers:

  • 🪽 Elytra: 1,500 credits (he sells, but won’t buy)
  • 🗿 Totem of Undying: 800 credits (he sells, but won’t buy)
  • He’ll buy your Ancient Debris and Netherite Scrap for a good price, but he won’t sell you any.

💵 Banknotes

Keep an eye out when you open chests in dungeons, temples, shipwrecks, villages and other structures. You might find some cash!

Banknote Value How often it turns up
🟩 1 Credit Note 1 credit Common (sometimes in bundles of up to 3)
🟦 5 Credit Note 5 credits Uncommon
🟥 10 Credit Note 10 credits Rare
🟨 50 Credit Note 50 credits Very rare!

There’s no need to carry them around. As soon as you pick up a banknote it goes straight into your balance, with a cheerful bell.

🎵 Money Milestones

Your on-screen banknote celebrates when your savings grow. Reach 100, 1,000 and 10,000 credits and you’ll hear a special tune, each one grander than the last. Can you hear them all?
