Nights Engine

Outlast-style horror for Minecraft. Nights Engine is a toolkit for building adventure horror maps: a night vision camcorder, lockers and beds to hide in, and asylum props. It’s the start of a successor to the Asylum Engine mod.

🚧 Early preview. Nights Engine is still in development, and there are no public builds yet. This page shows what works today and what’s on the way.

The camcorder

Hold up the camcorder and you’re looking through a viewfinder: a blinking REC with a timecode, a battery meter, sensor grain and a dark lens edge.

• Night vision turns everything green. It’s true green-only vision, so no colour bleeds through.
• It drains the battery. When the battery dies, the camera goes dead and you’re left in the dark with barely any light. Swap in a fresh battery to keep going.
• With LambDynamicLights, night vision lights up whatever you point the camera at, and you see other players’ camcorders lighting the way too.

Works with shader packs

Night vision doesn’t use the vanilla potion, so the world isn’t lit up for free. Nights Engine tells shader packs that you have night vision while the camcorder is on. Use a pack with a “night vision only” mode, like Loé’s Night Vision, and it switches on with the camcorder, with no potion flicker as it runs out.

No shader pack? Nights Engine has its own green night vision filter built in.

Hiding

• Lockers are two blocks tall, and the door swings open and shut behind you.
• Hospital beds let you crawl underneath.
• While you’re hiding, you only see out through the locker’s vent slats or the gap under the bed, and you can only look around a little.
• Mobs that didn’t see you go in lose track of you. Mobs that did will drag you back out.

Wheelchair

Sit in it and wheel yourself around, or grab the handles and push someone else. It’s slow, it can’t climb steps, and it squeaks as it rolls.

For map makers

• Everything is in its own creative tab.
• config/nights-engine.json lets you tune battery life, light levels, how close a mob has to be to spot you hiding, and more.
• You can trigger shader night vision from a command block with /effect give @p minecraft:luck infinite 0 true.
