介绍
Newly resurrected!
Redefining leather processing and crafting.
Optional JEI, Jade & The One Probe support
Animals drop hides, not leather. Scrape them, wash them, tan them and dry them, and you’ll have leather you earned. Along the way you get barrels, drying racks, packs, trunks, rugs and a lot more.
Leather Works is the first in a series of mods that overhaul and expand Minecraft’s crafting. It aims for a middle ground between semi-realism and simplicity, and blends right in with vanilla.
“But what does it DO?”
Simple mode (default)
Hide → Scrape → Wash → Tan → Dry → Leather
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Hunt | Go kill an animal with your murder weapon of choice. |
| 2. Scrape | Craft the hide with flint, a knife, a sword or an axe. You’ll keep the tool. |
| 3. Wash | Use scraped hides on a barrel of water , or wash them one at a time in open water. |
| 4. Tan | Add tannins (from bark) to a water barrel, then soak the washed hides in it. |
| 5. Dry | Hang them on a drying rack. Wait. Get leather… unless it rots! |
Challenging mode (for the patient and realism inclined)
Pelt → Lime (sealed, 2 days) → Scrape on the rack → Rinse → Tan (sealed, 2 days) → Dry
| 🟢 Simple | 🔴 Challenging | |
|---|---|---|
| Scraping | In the crafting grid | On the drying rack, a few strokes at a time |
| Soaking | Instant, in an open barrel | Days, in a sealed barrel |
| Extra step | None | Lime pelts in alkaline solution |
| Big animals | Their hides dry into more leather | Their pelts turn into more hides |
💡 Alkaline powder comes from burning dried kelp blocks, or from calcite, dripstone and coral blocks in a blast furnace. Dissolve it in water.
🤔 “Now I have leather… again. Why did I go through the trouble?”
Because bigger animals give more! A cow is worth more leather than a pig, and a ravager more than both. Every amount is configurable.
Naturalist, Twilight Forest and Environmental deer and boars work out of the box. Goat, camel and panda hides can be turned off.
Barrels
U-shaped tubs of planks, in every vanilla wood.
- 💧 Hold any fluid, even lava (don’t.)
- 🌧️ Fill with rain, and take buckets or bottles in and out.
- 🧼 Wash and soak: hides, tannin-making, and washing the dye out of leather armor, packs and leather blocks.
- 🔒 Seal them: load up to one stack, put a wooden pressure plate lid on top and wait. Pry it open with an axe. Data packs can use this for anything that steeps, ferments or pickles.
- 🪑 An empty sealed barrel is a rotatable decoration.
Drying racks
Slabs and string (or rope or twine), in every vanilla wood. They hang on walls or stand on the floor and hold anything
- 🏜️ Climate matters: hot, dry biomes and the Nether dry fast, cold and humid ones dry slowly. rain stops them.
- 🔥 Campfire smoke below a rack beats bad weather.
- 🐟 They also dry kelp, wet sponges, fish and flowers, and smoke raw meat over a campfire.
- ⚙️ Compatible with hoppers
🪓 Debarking
You need tannin to preserve hides. Use flint, a knife or an axe on a log to scrape at bark. Better tools are faster. Every tree gives its own bark, and some are richer in tannin than others.
Not worth it yet? I get it. There’s also…
Things to make!
| 🎒 Packs | No-frills 4×4 bags with a weight limit (lighter items fit more). 15 colors and nameable. It’s hard to keep things organized inside though… |
| 🟣 Ender pack | Your ender chest, on your back. |
| 🧳 Leather trunks | Chests made of leather sheets, in 15 colors. Unlike chests, they don’t mind sitting side by side. |
| 🟫 Leather blocks | Stitched decorative blocks in 15 colors. |
| 🐻 Hide rugs | Floor decorations! Sized to the animal. |
| 🛡️ Tattered armor | Leather armor tatters instead of breaking, keeps its enchantments (mostly) and can be fixed with a repair kit. |
| ♻️ Recycling | Cut anything made with leather into scraps with shears or a knife. 9 scraps make 1 leather. |
| 🧵 Sheets & strips | Crafting ingredients, plus an optional lead and saddle recipe. |
✨ And more
- 🧑🌾 Leatherworker villagers buy hides and bark, and sell tannins, repair kits, racks, packs and trunks.
- 🏆 Advancements
- 🏹 Light-armor archery: drawing a bow in leather, chainmail or nothing barely slows you down.
🧰 For modpack makers
Nearly everything is data, so you can add to it or change it with data packs:
| What | How |
|---|---|
| Drying rack, barrel, sealed barrel, rack scraping | Recipe types |
| Hide drops | Global loot modifiers |
| Bark per log, debarking tools | Data maps |
| Leatherworker trades | JSON files |
| Scraping tools, cutting tools, light armor, alkalis, rack cord… | Tags |
| Following config options | The leatherworks:config condition |
📖 The README has every format, with examples. The config covers the processing mode, drying, hide yields, pack capacity and much more.
