Without Honor: NPCs

Without Honor: NPCs is a clear, friendly tool for making NPCs right in the game: characters that talk, react to what’s going on, trade, fight and travel with you. No configs, no scripts: grab the NPC Spawner, place a character and edit it with Memorion’s Feather.
From the very start I wanted a tool that’s comfortable to use inside the game, and that’s the main philosophy of the mod. When you buy a new Legend of Zelda, you don’t open guides and wikis to figure out how to play, right? That’s what I’m aiming for with every update: every button and every checkbox tells you what it’s going to do. And if something is still unclear, ask in the comments or on the Discord server.
For Forge 1.20.1, NeoForge 1.21.1 and Fabric 1.21.1.
Dialogues
The most important part for me personally is the dialogue system. Dialogues live in a shared library of the world: you can sort them into groups, see which player made which dialogue, hang one dialogue on several NPCs, and export and import them without any fuss.
Inside is an editor that’s a pleasure to write in. Select some text and a formatting toolbar pops up with colors and styles. Copy, paste, undo, use the hotkeys you’re used to on your OS. A line can hold music, pictures, a map and a book straight from your inventory, and the scene can hold a second character. Turn on text animation, make answer choices with conditions and actions attached to them. A favorite little feature of mine is the glossary: highlight a word, and in the dialogue it gets explained with a tooltip. Once you’ve written something, check it for mistakes and run it right in the game without leaving the editor. There are plenty of small things in there, and most likely the only limit is your imagination.
The dialogue window
The editor is nice, but how the player sees the dialogue matters just as much. I gave it its own attention: there are three window styles to choose from, configurable both on the client and on the server, and a dialogue itself can say which style takes priority. It’s done in the manner of modern RPGs and stretches well even on ultrawide monitors (yep it was important).
Companions
Another thing I like is the following system. With it, any NPC can become a companion to brighten up your adventures. And it doesn’t just walk behind you: it sails after you in its own boat, rides beside you on its own pet, goes through portals with you. What it does when you die, log out or leave for another world is configurable too, and, like everything else, as conveniently as I could make it.
Behavior
A big topic. Honestly, it’s easier to jump into the game and see for yourself. But a few things worth pointing out: NPCs climb up and down ladders and vines on their own, swim and dive like players, eat, crouch (and sculk sensors don’t hear them), open doors. And they react to events the way you write them: “When → If → Then” rules are built from ready-made blocks, with templates for the common cases.
Daily schedule
Set coordinates, a time and an activity, and the NPC walks there on foot (in some cases teleports), takes the pose you want and does what you told it to. Tick “Global”, and it keeps its schedule even in chunks where you aren’t. There’s a separate menu for such NPCs where you can see who is where.
Combat
Of course you can change the stats, that’s the basics. Pick a creature type (zombies go after a “villager” while golems protect it), turn on a fear aura or enchantment damage, set up respawn and tweak resistances. You can hand an NPC a totem of undying. There are six combat styles right now: peaceful, melee, shield bearer, archer/thrower, potions and mage, and each one is tuned individually. There’s also a potion belt with its own mechanics: the NPC drinks healing and buffs on its own, throws harmful potions at enemies and helpful ones at allies.
Trading
One NPC can carry 36 trade offers. Each has its own limit (per player or for everyone), XP for the deal and conditions. For example, a player has a bad reputation with a faction, so the good stuff simply isn’t shown to them. Or it’s raining, and the merchant doesn’t feel like selling apples. Stock refills on a timer.
Flags
A handy thing for tracking players’ decisions and choices, a sort of NPC memory. Flags can be grouped, sorted and viewed per player. Say a player was rude to an NPC and got a flag for it. If they try to trade with that NPC, they can’t, because the offer checks for that flag. Whole quests can be built on flags, no separate quest mod needed.
Factions and reputation
Every NPC can belong to a faction, and every player has a reputation with it. Reputation is changed by actions in dialogues and reactions, and checked by conditions: in dialogues, trades and reactions. Killing a faction member costs the player reputation, and once they drop to the hostile rank, combat NPCs of that faction meet them with weapons drawn (that’s a separate checkbox in the attack targets). Factions can be at war with each other, and then their NPCs fight without you lifting a finger. Within one faction, nobody hits their own with arrows or spells unless you turn friendly fire on. The NPC’s current attitude toward the player is shown right in the dialogue window.
So first steps
- Place an NPC with the NPC Spawner and right-click it with Memorion’s Feather.
- Write a dialogue on the Dialogues tab.
- Add it on the Entry Points tab. Now the NPC opens it when a player right-clicks.
🧩 Compatibility
Every integration is optional. The mod works without any of them.
- Epic Fight: Epic Fight animations and movesets for NPCs.
- Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks: NPC mages, addon spells included.
- Emotecraft with bendy-lib: emotes on NPCs, with elbows and knees bending.
- Curios / Trinkets: accessories on NPCs.
- Etched: music from a link in dialogues.
- Sable: companions come aboard your ships. With Sable: Ragdolls and Ragdoll Reactions, NPCs fall as ragdolls.
- [[TaCZ] Timeless and Classics Zero](https://modrinth.com/mod/timeless-and-classics-zero): NPCs fight with TaCZ guns, with gunpack animations and a tactical AI of their own.
- Carry On: players can’t carry NPCs away (configurable).
- Resource packs: ETF / EMF, Fresh Animations: Player Extension, Just Expressions.

📖 Where the name comes from

For years, a few of us have played together on one private server, and over time it grew into something bigger:
a fantasy universe with its own history, factions and lore. We called that world Without Honor. Eventually
I wanted NPCs that truly belonged in it, characters I could shape, write and bring to life exactly the way
I imagined, and nothing out there did quite what I needed. So I built my own. This is that tool, cleaned up and
shared with you.
Tagging along is Alessia, the mod’s mascot. She ships as a built-in NPC skin: a small piece of our world you
can drop into yours.
