The Catacombs: Descent into Hell
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge 21.1.234+ · English & Spanish
Summary
The Catacombs adds a single structure to the Overworld — but it is a structure that goes down
sixty-two blocks through six themed levels, ends in a hall sixty-one blocks across, and has Lucifer
sitting at the far end of it.
It is not a dungeon you clear in ten minutes. It is a descent: you find a small ruined chapel on the
surface, you look down the hole under its floor, and the hole does not stop. Every level below has
its own stone, its own light, its own sound, its own creatures and its own miniboss, and every level
is more hostile than the one above it. By the fourth you are fighting on bridges over chasms in
near-total darkness. By the sixth there is no fire left at all — only black ice, black stone and
silence.
At the bottom is a throne room, and on the throne is a three-phase boss who does not stand up until
you have taken a third of his health.
The descent
| Level | Depth | Name | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Y 0 → -10 | The Upper Catacombs | Grey masonry, sarcophagi, urns, candles, cobwebs. Weak, numerous enemies. It teaches you the place. |
| II | Y -10 → -20 | The Descent | The walls stop being straight. Prisons, torture chambers, sacrificial altars, chains, cages, blood. |
| III | Y -20 → -30 | Dominion of the Damned | Hellforged brick, embers, lava, inscribed walls, temples with raised daises. Proper demons. |
| IV | Y -30 → -40 | The Abyss | Enormous vertical voids crossed by a single narrow bridge. Violet crystals. Almost no light. |
| V | Y -40 → -50 | The Lords of Hell | Infernal fortresses, gilded brick, giant columns, blue soulflame, empty thrones. Elites. |
| VI | Y -50 → -60 | Treachery | Everyone expects fire. The ninth circle is ice: black stone, dark ice, frost crystals — and near-total silence. |
| — | Y -62 → -36 | The Throne of Lucifer | A 61×61×26 hall. You enter on a balcony seven blocks up and see the throne across all of it. |
Every level is generated procedurally on a grid of 13-block cells. Rooms are connected by a minimum
spanning tree, so no wing is ever unreachable — and then extra corridors are laid on top of the tree,
which is what turns a clean graph into something that genuinely feels like a labyrinth.
Every level has at least three ways down. A wide ceremonial stairwell, a narrow shortcut well
somewhere else entirely, and one open shaft per chasm room. A stairwell is cut straight through the
floor of the room above it and ringed with a parapet, so you can walk to the edge and look down into
the next level before you commit to it — and its palette changes halfway down, so you literally watch
the architecture become more infernal as you walk. Chasm rooms break through into the level below
outright: the floor is gone, a slab bridge is the safe way across, and a ledge spirals down the pit
wall for anyone willing to take the fast way.
It is dark. Sconces are rare and get rarer as you descend — roughly one every eighteen blocks of
corridor in the upper crypts, far less below the Abyss. Braziers, crystals and embers were all dimmed
deliberately. You are meant to carry your own light, and to never see the far end of a room.
Room types: crypts · prisons · torture chambers · forbidden libraries · shrines · ceremonial
temples · ritual sacrifice chambers · treasuries · combat arenas · chasms · flooded halls · ruins ·
barracks · hidden vaults that no corridor reaches · one miniboss arena per level.
The enemies
Ten creatures, each with its own model, its own texture, its own sound identity and its own reason to
exist in a fight.
- Catacomb Demon — bone-white, eyeless, runs on all fours. The fastest and weakest thing in the
mod. Level I teaches you to fear speed before it teaches you to fear numbers. - The Damned — a human shape punished out of true. Slow, heavy, endless. When one dies its soul
tears loose and fills the room with Dread. - Infernal Jailer — an armoured brute with a maul and a ring of keys. Its shackle strike stops you
running, which is what turns a jail block into a trap. - Executioner — a hooded giant with an oversized cleaver. One question, asked repeatedly: can you
stay out of a wide, slow, obvious arc? Anything below a third health it simply finishes. - Fallen Knight — full plate, raises its shield between blows and takes half damage while
guarding. Punish the commitment, don’t trade hits. - Flame Lord — keeps its distance and throws hellfire in bursts of three. The reason you cannot
just charge down a corridor. - Abyss Guardian — a four-armed colossus of black stone. Nothing pushes it, nothing burns it, and
its shockwave covers most of a bridge. - Knight of Treachery — blinks behind you and takes a backstab bonus you can steal from its blade.
- Fallen Angel — flies. Rare, and it breaks every tactic that works on the ground.
- Throne Guardian — the statues lining the approach to the throne, which are not statues.
Minibosses
| Level | The fight | |
|---|---|---|
| Charon, the Ferryman | II | Oar sweeps, endless summons, and every few seconds he hauls you across the water to him. |
| Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies | III | Chain → drag → flatten. His whole fight is one loop, and the fight is breaking it. |
| Abaddon, Devourer of the Abyss | IV | Blinks constantly, impales through your cover with piercing lances, drags an Abyss Guardian into the fight. |
| Belial, Lord of the Blue Flame | V | Meteor rain. The first fight where you have to watch the ceiling as well as the floor. |
| Astaroth, the Frozen Warden | VI | Frost novas that strip the mobility you have relied on for six levels. Carries the Key of Treachery — and nothing else in the game does. |
Lucifer, Lord of Treachery
He is not spawned when the world generates. He is waiting: the throne wakes him when a player walks
into the hall, and if you flee, he rises again when you come back.
- Phase 1 — Enthroned (100–66%). He does not stand up. Hellfire volleys, summoned wretches,
expanding rings of fire, the first meteors. You learn the arena while the arena is still safe. - Phase 2 — Descent (66–33%). He rises. Blinks behind you, slams, sweeps fans of dark lances,
calls his Throne Guardians. Standing still stops working. - Phase 3 — Treachery (33–0%). The floor catches fire, the light dies, the meteors never stop, and
the Chains of Treachery pin whoever hesitates. Everything comes faster — but nothing new is
introduced, because by now you know every tell.
Every heavy attack has a visible wind-up, and the ground eruption lands a full second after its
telegraph. It is meant to be hard and learnable, not a gear check.
His rewards: Lucifer's Heart — guaranteed, and obtainable in no other way — plus the
Morningstar of Lucifer and the Crown of Treachery.
Loot and progression
Loot scales strictly with depth. Level I chests hold bones, torches and a bone dagger; level VI
chests hold netherite, Fallen armour and the Betrayer’s Edge.
- Weapons (12): Bone Dagger · Crypt Blade · Executioner’s Axe (executes low-health targets) ·
Hellsteel Sword · Hellsteel Greatsword (cleaves everything around the target) · Abyssal Scythe
(wide sweep with lifesteal) · Flame Lord’s Staff (ranged hellfire) · Soulreaper (every kill heals
and empowers you) · Fallen Blade (burns demons, glides on demand) · Betrayer’s Edge (devastating
from behind, ordinary face to face) · Chain Hook (drags a creature to you) · Morningstar of Lucifer. - Armour (4 sets): Crypt · Hellsteel · Fallen · and the unique Crown of Treachery.
- Relics (6): Lantern of the Damned (night vision in the dark, holds off Dread) · Heart of the
Abyss (a permanent shell of absorption) · Demonic Totem (snatches you back from death, once) ·
Tome of the Damned (eight pages of lore, fully translated) · Catacombs Compass (finds the dungeon) ·
Key of Treachery. - Materials, consumables, and a full hellsteel tool tier, all craftable.
Decoration
107 blocks across six palettes: catacomb stone and brick in five variants, bone brick, sarcophagi,
urns, soul candles, scorched and blood masonry, ritual stone, sacrificial altars, two-block statues,
rusted bars, infernal chains, torture racks, hellforged brick, ember stone, magma brick, inscribed
stone, braziers, eternal flame, abyssal stone and crystals, infernal obsidian, gilded infernal brick,
hellsteel block, throne stone, blue soulflame, frozen black stone, dark ice, treachery crystals,
traitor statues — plus stairs, slabs, walls and pillars for every major family.
Seven custom particles (hellfire, soul embers, drifting ash, treachery frost, void sparks, cursed
runes, soulflame) give each level its own air.
Atmosphere
Each of the six levels has its own ambient bed and its own flavour sounds — distant screams, dragging
chains, wind from below, whispers, far-off lava — played at the player and slightly off the player,
so the dungeon always feels larger than the room you are standing in.
Treachery is deliberately the quietest place in the mod. Its ambience plays less than half as often
as anywhere else, so the silence itself becomes the signal that something is wrong.
Minibosses share a theme; Lucifer has his own.
Built for performance
A structure this size only works because of a few deliberate choices:
- Nothing is built up front. Laying out six levels is a few thousand integer operations done once.
Blocks are painted lazily, one chunk at a time, as players actually walk into them. - Every write is clipped to the chunk being generated, so a 40×40 room never iterates 40×40
sixteen times over. - Randomness is positional, not sequential — decoration hashes the coordinates, so a room looks
identical no matter which chunk reaches it first. No seams, no mismatched halves. - The spawners are not vanilla spawners. They act once every two seconds, refuse to run with no
player nearby or with the room already full, and delete themselves after a finite budget. A cleared
wing costs literally nothing. - Traps have no tickers at all — spike traps and flame vents are purely reactive.
- Connectivity is guaranteed by construction, and verified. Pieces are painted in a deliberate
order (rooms deepest-first, then the entrance shaft, then stairwells, then corridors, then the
throne room), and each L shaped corridor is a single piece that carves both legs before painting
anything, so a corner can never seal itself. The build was checked by generating a dungeon on a
dedicated server and flood-filling it from the surface chapel: all six levels come out reachable,
and the throne room is reachable only once the Gate of Treachery is treated as open. - Lucifer’s arena transformation is throttled to eight blocks a tick with a hard cap, and his
meteors deal area damage instead of exploding, so the throne room is never destroyed.
Configuration
Nearly everything is configurable: whether the structure generates at all, how many levels it has,
how large the layout is, how many rooms per level, global monster health and damage multipliers,
Lucifer’s health, boss damage, whether traps and spawners generate, spawner budgets, depth effects,
whether Lucifer may reshape his arena, and whether the throne gate requires the key. Ambient sounds,
boss music and particle density are separate client-side options.
Localisation
Fully localised in English (en_us) and Spanish (es_es) — 317 keys each. Blocks, items,
creatures, bosses, effects, advancements, subtitles, on-screen messages, item lore and the eight pages
of the Tome of the Damned. There is not a single player-facing literal in the Java source.
Finding it
The Catacombs are extremely rare by design — one placement attempt every 110 chunks. Use the
Catacombs Compass (found in the entrance chapel and in library rooms) or, in a creative world,
/locate structure catacombs:catacombs.
Then look for a small ruined chapel with broken walls and two toppled columns, and look down.
