Fisher Man

Fisher Man adds a new villager to Tektopia: the Fisher. He walks down to the water near his hut, casts his line, waits for a bite, reels in the catch and carries it home to the village storage. He crafts his own fishing rods, the Enchanter makes them better, the Chef cooks the fish and the Merchant buys it. And now and then something more valuable than a fish comes up on the hook.

Features

A new profession and its own home

  • Fisher token – sold by the Tradesman (from 3 emeralds; like every token, the price rises with the village’s profession sales). Right-click any villager with it and he becomes a Fisher.
  • Fishers Hut – a structure marker sold by the Architect for 10 emeralds. Build a small house with a door, a roof and one bed, and put the marker in an item frame next to the door, like any other Tektopia structure. The marker glows when the hut is valid.
  • The Fishers Hut is a one-bed home: only Fishers sleep there, and Fishers sleep only in a Fishers Hut. Build one hut for each Fisher, close to the water.
  • Wandering Nomads can arrive as former Fishers and bring their fishing skill with them. The Fisher levels up like every other Tektopia profession.

Real fishing, fully animated

  • Where he fishes: real open water (lakes, rivers, ponds) within 10 blocks of his hut, or up to 16 if there is nothing closer. The water has to be big enough, and he leaves farm irrigation water alone, so he never fishes in your fields.
  • Free space: he casts only from a spot where the rod and the line have room. He casts over fences and gates, but never through walls, windows or roofs.
  • Animations: he takes the rod off his shoulder, casts, waits, the bobber dips, he strikes, reels in and lands the catch. Between catches and on the way home he carries the rod over his shoulder, and he has his own animations for crafting a rod.
  • One trip is 4–7 casts, plus one extra cast for every 20 skill levels. Then he carries everything to the village storage.
  • The catch: cod, salmon, clownfish and pufferfish. A skilled Fisher and a rod with Luck of the Sea bring up more of the rarer fish.

Skill that matters

The higher the Fisher’s skill:

  • the shorter he waits for a bite (up to half the time; Lure shortens it further),
  • the fewer fish get away (about 62 % of bites are landed at the start, about 95 % at top skill),
  • the more often two fish come up at once (up to 30 %),
  • the less his rod wears out (up to a 50 % chance that a catch costs no durability).

Treasure from the deep

Sometimes the hook brings up more than a fish. What he can find grows with his skill:

Find From skill
Coal 0
Iron ore 5
Lapis lazuli, Redstone 10
Diamond 15
Gold ore 20
Emerald 60

The chances rise with skill and with Luck of the Sea (+10 % per level). A rare find makes the Fisher happy, and you will hear it. To keep things fair, common finds stop coming up when the village storage already holds plenty of them.

A complete fishing rod cycle

  • He crafts his own rods from 1 log and 2 string. String comes up with the catch now and then, more often when the village is short of it.
  • The Blacksmith can keep a small reserve of fishing rods in the storage.
  • The Enchanter enchants fishing rods with lapis: Lure, Luck of the Sea, Unbreaking or Mending. A rod with Mending slowly repairs itself while the Fisher works.
  • He always uses his best rod, and takes a better one from the village storage when there is one.
  • Never stuck: a Fisher who has had no rod at all for 5 minutes of work time gets a new one.
  • String is only good for fishing rods, so it no longer appears among the Merchant’s goods.

Fish on the table and on the market

  • Villagers eat fish. Hungry villagers can eat raw fish, with crumbs flying while they eat.
  • The Chef cooks cod and salmon in the kitchen furnace. He keeps a few raw fish in the storage and balances raw and cooked fish, so the village does not run out of either.
  • Catch of the day: the Merchant buys fish, but only one kind each day (cod, salmon, clownfish or pufferfish), rotating so that every kind gets its turn.
  • Every job can be switched on or off in the villager’s screen: Go Fishing and Craft: Fishing Rod (Fisher), Craft: Fishing Rod (reserve) (Blacksmith), Enchant: Fishing Rod (Enchanter).

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge 14.23.5.2860
  • Tektopia 1.1.0 (and the CraftStudio API it needs)

Install the same jar on the server and on every client.

Compatibility

Fisher Man uses a small core mod to hook into Tektopia while the game runs; it does not change Tektopia’s files. It adds the Fisher profession and the Fishers Hut, and hooks into the village homes, the village economy, the Chef, the Enchanter, the Blacksmith, the furnace emptying and the villagers’ eating. Another mod that changes the same Tektopia methods could conflict with it.

FAQ

Do I need a config file? No. There is nothing to set up.

Does it change other villagers? Only by adding to their jobs: the Chef cooks fish, the Enchanter enchants fishing rods, the Blacksmith keeps a few rods in reserve, villagers can eat fish, and the Merchant buys fish (and no longer sells string). Everything else about them stays the same.

Where should I build the Fishers Hut? Near water. The Fisher looks for water within 10 blocks of his hut, or up to 16 if there is nothing closer.
