Research It

作者:Zkev1

Research system for modpacks. The pack maker decides what's locked: a whole mod, single items, recipes, mobs, dimensions or commands. Players unlock them by building a Research Station and feeding it what each research asks for.

Research It

Made for packs that want progression you have to work for. Everything is set up with datapacks or the built in editor.

How it plays

– Research Station: a 3×3 machine. Pick a research, load the items, fluids, energy and XP it needs, and press Research. A hologram above the station shows how far along it is.
– Research Pedestals: some research wants items placed on pedestals around the station instead of inside it.
– Builds, not just buttons: research can also ask for blocks nearby (like 8 bookshelves), a creature in the area, or a certain dimension, biome, time or weather. If something goes missing halfway through, the research pauses and continues once it’s back.
– Works with pipes and cables: items, fluids and FE from other mods can go into any side of the station.
– Research Database: a tree that looks like the advancements screen. Open it with the Research Tablet or the B key. Hover any locked item and press B to jump straight to the research that unlocks it.
– Research Disks: teach a research instantly. Handy as quest rewards or loot.

Locks that actually hold

Locked items get a padlock icon and a tooltip saying which research you need. Until then you can’t craft them, use them, place them, wear them or pick them up. (Configurable)

It also works with machines from other mods, without any special compatibility: an auto crafter or furnace won’t make something its owner hasn’t researched yet. If a locked item still ends up in your inventory somehow, it gets dropped at your feet. (Configurable)

Every type of lock can be turned off in the config.

Solo, team or the whole server

Each research can count for just the player, their team, or everyone on the server. FTB Teams parties share their research. Without FTB Teams, vanilla teams are used.

For pack makers

– In game editor: drag research around, shift-drag to link them, and edit requirements and unlocks in a simple form. Changes apply right away without /reload and are saved as normal datapack files you can copy into your pack.
– Lock a whole mod and still release a few items early: the most specific rule wins (item, then tag, then mod).
– Rewards: items, XP or commands when a research finishes.
– Hidden research that only shows up once its prerequisites are done.
– Example datapack included, so you can see how it’s set up: /datapack enable “mod/researchit:datapacks/examples”`

Works with

– JEI: recipes for locked items are hidden and replaced with a “Research Required” page. Press R on a locked item to see what unlocks it. A padlock button next to JEI’s config button hides everything you can’t make yet.
– FTB Quests: a task for finishing a research, a reward that grants one, and research that needs a quest done first.
– FTB Teams: shared research for parties.

All of these are optional.

Commands

/researchit list, info, grant, revoke, reset and disk. Everything except list and info needs operator.
