Soil that remembers how you farm it
Overhauled Farming turns farmland into something you build up over time. Every 2×2 patch of farmland keeps a score that rises when you harvest it by hand and falls when it’s trampled, neglected or planted with the same crop forever. Better soil gives bigger harvests and unlocks new crops, and those crops feed better livestock. Farming becomes a profession worth specializing in, not a chore you automate and forget.
Made for NeoForge 1.21.1. Patchouli is recommended for the in-game Farmer’s Manual; the mod still runs without it.
This mod was made with servers in mind and should help create a dedicated farming specialization among players. The mod works even better on servers where you integrate your recipes with this mod’s items.
Everything it adds
Tools, crops, feeds, fertilizers, the Farmer’s Mill, and the goods you can make from rare crops. Each one is either explained below or in the in-game Farmer’s Manual.

Soil quality

Farmland is grouped into 2×2 cells. Each fully grown crop a player harvests raises its cell’s score, and the score sets a tier: Common, Kept, Rich, Fertile and Prime. Higher tiers multiply your harvest, up to 2.5x on Prime by default. Hold the Farmer’s Loupe and look at farmland to see its exact score, tier and everything affecting it.
How soil gains and loses score (click to expand)
- Only harvests by real players count. Water, pistons, explosions, dispensers, and deployers drop normal items and earn nothing.
- Soil keeps its score for a day after its last harvest, then slowly loses a percentage of it each day of server uptime. High scores lose more per day, so Prime soil needs regular work. Lower tiers last weeks.
- Trampling costs points. Farmland only turns back to dirt once its cell reaches zero.
- Breaking farmland (by hand, piston, explosion or drying out) cuts its cell’s score.
- Fortune works at a quarter of its usual strength on crops, so it can’t replace good soil.
- Bone meal does nothing to crops by default.
- Plant whole cells: a half-planted cell gains slowly but decays just as fast.
Crop rotation

Grow the same crop on the same soil for too long and it falls into monoculture: harvests shrink and the soil stops improving until you rotate. One block of a second crop per cell is enough. Anyone looking at heavily overworked soil sees a warning.
Monoculture details (click to expand)
- Each cell counts a streak of full harvest cycles of the same crop. Harvesting a different crop resets it.
- Past the limit (5 cycles by default), the cell’s yield drops a little more each cycle and it loses some score.
- Its score is frozen at a plateau: fertilizer can win back lost points but never push it higher until you rotate.
Fertilizer and soil care
Harvests drop chaff, which crafts into fertilizer. Fertilizer treats a 3×3 area, but only soil that’s actually being farmed: each cell needs a few harvests between doses. Rich and Prime Fertilizer work faster, and Soil Conditioner slows decay while you’re away.
Fertilizer and conditioner details (click to expand)
- Fertilizer adds full points up to a score of 400, falling to half strength by 1000, so it speeds up the climb but can’t replace harvesting.
- Weak Fertilizer is a cheap early recipe at 60% strength. Rich and Prime Fertilizer use rare crops and saltpeter for 2x and 3x the points.
- Herbal and Rooty Soil Conditioner cut a cell’s decay by 25% or 50% for 10 days of server uptime. Each cell they touch is treated whole, one item per block.
- Fertilizer and conditioner are ordinary items, so farmers can sell them.
New crops
Four crops only grow on good soil: Clover (Kept) and Alfalfa (Rich) for livestock feed, and the rare Tender Herb (Fertile) and Delicate Root (Prime). On poorer soil they simply stop growing until the soil improves.
Where to find seeds (click to expand)
- Clover and Alfalfa seeds drop from grass and ferns.
- Wild Tender Herb grows in plains and wild Delicate Root in dark forests. Seeds also turn up in village chests, from wandering traders, and rarely from harvests on soil good enough to grow them.
- Rare crops go into crafting kits, top-tier feed, Rich and Prime Fertilizer, conditioner, mill upgrades, seed coatings and the goods below.
Livestock

Livestock breed only on crafted feed, and what they eat sets how much they give. Basic wheat feed gets you started; feed made with better crops means more meat, leather, wool and milk and better breeding odds. Keep herds a reasonable size: crowding cuts both.
Feed, breeding and crowding details (click to expand)
- Five feeds, from Basic to Rooty: drops range from 60% to 150% of vanilla and breeding chance from 50% to 100%.
- An animal’s drops follow the worst of its last three feeds, so one good meal doesn’t help.
- A failed breeding roll uses the feed and puts that animal on a 2-minute cooldown. Sneak to feed without breeding.
- Up to 24 animals of any kind within 16 blocks is fine; beyond that, breeding and yield slowly fall. Separate pens keep full rates.
- Milking time scales with feed and crowding. Eggs are unchanged. Leather gets an extra multiplier. Looting works at a quarter strength.
- Covers cows, mooshrooms, sheep, pigs, chickens, rabbits, goats, llamas and hoglins. Modded animals can be added with a tag.
- Horses breed as usual; the Bloodline Treat is an optional upgrade that pulls a foal’s stats toward the better parent.
Efficiency: Careful Hands and the Farmer’s Mill

Careful Hands is a personal skill: every crop you harvest counts toward up to +15% extra yield. The Farmer’s Mill takes fresh crops and returns more of the same crop, with a bonus that grows with how much it has milled recently. Both reward steady, sustained farming over stockpiling.
Careful Hands and Mill details (click to expand)
- Careful Hands has three tiers (+5%, +10%, +15%). It only fades after a day without harvesting and stays through death.
- Crops a player harvests are marked Fresh. The mill only accepts Fresh crops and returns plain ones, so nothing can be milled twice.
- Seasoning builds from daily volume: today’s milling raises tomorrow’s bonus, from +3% on a new mill up to +30%.
- Hoppers and Create logistics can feed it from the top or sides and pull from the bottom.
- Mill upgrades keep more seasoning each day. Breaking the mill loses its seasoning but returns the upgrade.
Tools
- Farmer’s Loupe: read soil, livestock and horse stats at a glance. Sneak to see your Careful Hands progress.
- Scythe and Great Scythe: harvest a 3×3 or 5×5 area in one swing. They also work as slow, heavy weapons and take Fortune, Unbreaking and Mending.
- Seed Pouch: holds seeds of one kind and plants a whole area at once. Upgrade it with crafting kits for a 3×3 area and up to 512 seeds.
- Seed Coatings: load them into the pouch to make the next crops grow faster.
Rare crop goods
Tender Herb and Delicate Root make goods worth trading to players who don’t farm.
The full list (click to expand)
- Herbal and Rooty Rations: eaten instantly, with Regeneration or Resistance.
- Herbed Stew (Night Vision) and Hearty Root Stew (Haste).
- Antidote: cures Poison, Wither and Hunger.
- Smoothing Salve: right-click onto gear so its next anvil job costs half and doesn’t raise its repair penalty. Also halves the cost in Create: Enchantment Industry’s Blaze Enchanter and Blaze Forger.
- Bloodline Treat for horse breeders.
- Green and purple dye, Herb Bundles and Root Crates for decoration.
The Farmer’s Manual

Craft the Farmer’s Manual from chaff and a book. It opens with a two-page summary of everything you need to know, then explains every system in detail, with recipes. Its numbers come straight from the server’s config, so it’s always accurate. Without Patchouli, it shows a short plain-text summary instead.
Compatibility and configuration
- Patchouli (optional, recommended): powers the Farmer’s Manual.
- Create: Enchantment Industry (optional): Smoothing Salve discounts its enchanting machines.
- Almost every number (tier thresholds, decay, yields, feed rates, mill seasoning and more) is in the server config.
- Area tools fire normal break and place events, so claims mods that protect those already protect against scythes and the Seed Pouch.
- Because this mod modifies soil and general attributes, it should be compatible with most other farming mods out of the box.
