Kotoba Keep

Say it to keep it.

Learn Japanese vocabulary while you mine, craft, and explore. Kotoba Keep turns everyday Minecraft moments into spoken Japanese challenges using the game’s official Japanese item and mob names.

When a challenge appears, listen to the word, read the hints, and say its Japanese name into your microphone before time runs out. Get it right to keep your newly collected items. Run out of time after your retry, and those new items are removed—items you already owned stay safe.

Mob kills bring their own challenges: drops stay locked until you say the mob’s Japanese name.

For example, dirt becomes 土・つち・tsuchi, and a cow becomes ウシ・ushi.

• Listen and repeat: Japanese voice clips introduce new words and play the correct reading after each answer.
• Support for beginners: Furigana, romaji, and your game’s language help you understand each word.
• Hints that fade: Reading aids gradually disappear as you answer correctly.
• Practice over time: Familiar words return for review, with optional growing review intervals.
• A manageable pace: By default, at most one brand-new word is introduced per minute.
• Offline speech recognition: Recognition runs locally with Vosk.
• Adjustable difficulty: Customize timers, retries, hints, and learning options in game.
• Singleplayer and multiplayer: Learn on your own or alongside friends.

Press J to hear a word again, R to retry, and K to open the settings. Replaying a word costs a little time, so listen carefully!

Getting started

Requires Minecraft 26.3, Fabric Loader 0.20.1+, Fabric API, Simple Voice Chat, Java 25, and a microphone.

1. Install Kotoba Keep and its required mods.
2. Download the Japanese speech model (link) and extract it so its folder is at config/kotobakeep/vosk-model-small-ja-0.22/.
3. Launch Minecraft, select your microphone in Simple Voice Chat with V, and start playing.

For multiplayer, install the mod and dependencies on the server and every participating client. Only clients need the speech model.
