“Wait… I only had ONE diamond.”

Something in your inventory is not what it seems.

It looks exactly like your stuff. Same item, same name, same stack. It sits quietly right next to the real thing… until you notice it blinking. It copies anything it touches, it bites the hand that picks it up, it multiplies in your crafting grid — and if you throw it out, it doesn’t leave. It becomes you.

How it starts

You’re playing normal Minecraft. You open your inventory and there are two diamonds where there should be one. One of them is looking at you.

What it does

It hides. Now and then an imposter shows up in your inventory, right next to one of your things, disguised as it. Same icon, same name in the tooltip. The only way to tell: its eyes follow your mouse.

It copies. Every now and then it crawls to another slot and becomes a copy of whatever it lands next to: your sword, your bread, your blocks.

It bites. Hold it on your cursor too long and it bites you, then jumps back into your inventory. Try to use it — it bites.

It multiplies. Put it in a crafting grid to turn it into something else, and instead of a result the grid fills up with copies of itself.

Don’t throw it out

A thrown-out imposter lies on the ground for a second… then stands up as you: a doppelganger with your skin, huge eyes and a toothy smile. It walks straight to you, steals something from your inventory and runs. Kill it to get your stuff back. After 5 minutes it vanishes in a puff and drops whatever it stole.

Settings

Everything can be tuned or switched off in config/invimposter-common.toml:

Creative mode

The Imposter (disguised as a diamond) is in Tools & Utilities.
The Doppelganger has its own spawn egg.

FAQ

Does it work in multiplayer? Yes. Install it on the server and on every client. Each doppelganger copies the skin of the player it was made from.

Can I add it to my modpack? Yes, go ahead. A link back to this page is appreciated.

Will it break my world? No. It never breaks blocks. Anything a doppelganger steals drops when you kill it, or when it vanishes after 5 minutes.

How do I make it stop? Set spawnNaturally to false in the config, or turn off any single feature you don’t like.
