AOSO: Ships, Airships & Arms

Ships that sail, airships that fly, a steam plane and a horse-drawn carriage, the arms and armour of the middle ages, and a world that moves around them: merchant cogs and pirate galleons on the sea, caravans and scouting parties on the roads, and squads of soldiers marching over the land.

This mod runs on its own and needs no other mod. It belongs to the AOSO series, and with AOSO: Epic Combat installed every weapon here gets its own combat moves. Available for NeoForge 26.3 and 1.21.1.

SHIPS

Cog: a merchant sailing ship with a hold. Set it on water and board it; the first aboard takes the helm. W and S let out or take in sail, A and D work the rudder, sneak and right-click to open the hold.

War Galleon: eight aboard and rows of cannon. B fires the broadside on the side you look toward, or the bow gun ahead. Each shot takes a cannonball from the hold or your pack.

Ships can take a fight: no single broadside sinks a hull. Come alongside another ship and press G to throw grappling hooks. A gangway is laid across and the rails open, so crews can board each other. N cuts the lines when the fight is done.

You can walk the deck and climb the ladders while the ship is under way.

AIRSHIPS AND THE STEAM PLANE

Airship: feed its burner with coal, charcoal or blaze powder. Jump to climb, X or Ctrl to sink, W and S for the engines, A and D to turn.

War Airship: flies like the airship, with guns on both sides (B) and fire-bombs dropped below (G).

Steam Plane: a biplane with a copper boiler in its nose and a brass gun on its top wing, two aboard. Fill the hopper with coal, open the throttle and roll; at speed it lifts off. It climbs, dives and banks into its turns, reaching about 90 km/h. Fly too slowly and it stalls and drops.

ON LAND

Carriage: a horse-drawn carriage. The driver sits up front and two passengers ride inside, facing each other, with room for luggage. H changes seat.

Cannon: an iron gun on a wooden carriage. Set it on the ground and man it. It turns where you look and marks where its ball will land.

ARMS AND ARMOUR

Twelve steel weapons: longsword, Zweihander, rondel dagger, falchion, battle axe, war hammer, flanged mace, morning star, flail, spear, halberd and lance.

Four sets of armour, each worn in full 3D on the body: knight’s plate, the crusader’s great helm with surcoat and mail, the Norman nasal helm and hauberk, and the quilted gambeson.

Steel ore is found in the Overworld, the Nether and the End. Smelt it into steel; mail rings make the mail armour. Every ship, airship, weapon and piece of armour is crafted.

LIFE ON THE SEAS AND ROADS

Merchant cogs under sand-coloured sails cross the oceans with their sailors and captain. Sail up to one and she heaves to, and her captain trades from the deck: fish and pirate doubloons for the goods of far ports, ship’s stores and now and then something rare.

Pirate galleons under black sails hunt. They run you down, lay their broadside alongside and fire, while boarders leap onto your deck with cutlasses and crossbowmen shoot from the rails. The raid’s progress is shown until the last pirate falls; then the galleon and the plunder in her hold are yours. There are no pirates on Peaceful.

Merchants of the Roads drive their carriages across the open lands and stop for anyone who rides up, trading gems, gold, rare goods and shipwright’s gear for emeralds, gold and diamonds.

Scouting parties of the realm range the land behind their captain, clearing the roads of monsters. Ask a captain what his party has seen.

Squads of foot march in column behind their leader: knights in plate, crusaders, Norman men-at-arms and levies in gambesons, three to six to a squad. They fight the creatures of the night and leave people alone, but strike one of them and the whole squad turns on you.

FOR OPERATORS

/aoso_vessels squad (knight, crusader, norman or levy) and /aoso_vessels caravan call a squad or a caravan near you. /aoso_seas pirate, /aoso_seas merchant and /aoso_seas scouts do the same for the sea and the roads.
