PCA JEI

See where every puzzle item is found and where it’s needed, right in JEI. Plus help pages for PCA puzzle items and coins.

PCA JEI connects the Pixel Creators Academy mods to JEI (Just Enough Items). Instead of crafting recipes, it shows puzzle rooms: hover over a key, shard or pick in JEI and press a key to see which rooms you’ll find it in and which rooms need it.

It was made for PCA’s teaching servers, where students solve escape-room puzzles built by PCA Puzzle, but works in any Forge 1.20.1 game with JEI.

What it’s like to use

A student is stuck in front of a locked door showing a Map Shard outline. They open JEI, find the Map Shard and press R ("show recipes"). Instead of a crafting grid, JEI shows a Puzzle Rooms page for each room that has one, such as the Locked Gallery, the Observatory and the Lever Hall. Each page shows:

• the room’s name and size,
• Needed here: the items you need to get in or to solve it,
• Found here: the items in its chests,
• a short description, such as "Set the five levers so their lamps match the pattern on the wall, and the gate in front of the chest opens."

Pressing U ("show uses") on an item shows the rooms that need it instead. So "what is this key for?" and "where do I find the thing for this door?" both have an answer one key press away.

Teachers get something too. Each page also says which mod the room comes from and what to type in a layout’s "file", so planning a puzzle is quicker.

Features

Puzzle room pages

• A page for every room from PCA Puzzle (the castle rooms: library, armoury, greenhouse, observatory, mine and more) and from PCA Puzzle Rooms (the manor rooms, including the Lever Hall and Deep Mine puzzles).
• R on an item: the rooms it’s found in. U on an item: the rooms that need it.
• The chest icon in JEI’s category bar lists every room.
• Other mods can add rooms. Any mod or resource pack can add a small JSON file to assets/<modid>/pcapuzzle_rooms/ and its rooms appear too (the format is in the mod’s README).

Info pages

JEI’s information tab gets a plain-English page for:

• every PCA Puzzle item: what it does, where it’s found and how to use it (e.g. "Sneak and use it to pour a water source, for example to make a path over lava"), including the teacher-only Master Key,
• the PCA Puzzle Rooms blocks: the Prospector’s Pick, Loose Rock, and the lever puzzle blocks, with how to build your own lever puzzle,
• every PCA Currency coin: what it’s worth, how the wallet button works, and the teacher commands.

Requirements and dependencies

Nothing breaks if an optional mod is missing: its pages just don’t appear.

• Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47 or newer
• It only adds JEI pages, so it only needs to be on players’ games. The server doesn’t need it (it does no harm there).

Standalone

PCA JEI doesn’t need the Pixel Creators Academy server or any PCA service. It works in any Forge 1.20.1 game with JEI.

Getting started

1. Install JEI and PCA JEI alongside PCA Puzzle (and PCA Puzzle Rooms and PCA Currency if you use them).
2. Open your inventory, find a Brass Key in JEI and press R: you’ll see the Storeroom, the Armoury and the Dining Hall. Press U to see the rooms that are locked with it.
