TL;DR

  • The Mechanic:
Killing mobs corrupts the local land, while sacrificing materials at an Atonement Hearth cleanses it back to neutral.

  • The Choice:
Keep the ground pristine to unlock a mob-free sanctuary with boosted farming and utility, or push corruption to the brink to farm rare Nether loot and massive XP in a high-stakes daylight arena.

Cruelty Generation & Regional Spread

Cruelty attaches directly to your exact coordinates upon a kill rather than the victim’s location, preventing safe sniping across territory borders. Generated cruelty applies fully across your immediate local area and bleeds at roughly half intensity into the surrounding perimeter.

Chunks have a hard upper cap on total cruelty. When left alone, land sheds corruption every few in-game days, and this passive cleansing accelerates considerably if the region remains completely peaceful. Actions shift corruption levels drastically:

  • Hostile Monsters: Adds minor cruelty.
  • Passive Livestock: Adds moderate cruelty.
  • Monster Spawners: Destroying a spawner cleanses a solid chunk of corruption.
  • The Wither: Unleashes a massive shockwave of cruelty upon summoning, followed by a steady drip every few seconds it remains alive in the Overworld.
  • The Warden: Slaying an ancient titan plunges the land into darkness with an overwhelming surge of cruelty.

Consecrated Sanctuary (Zero Cruelty)

Reaching zero cruelty does not bestow automatic blessings. To consecrate a region, you must perform a dedicated sacrifice at an Atonement Hearth while the land is pristine. Consecration is fragile: generating even a single point of cruelty shatters the sanctuary immediately.

While maintained, a sanctuary provides powerful passive boons:

  • Hostile monster spawns are completely suppressed, even in total darkness.
  • Farmland cannot be trampled by running players or wandering livestock.
  • Crops grow significantly faster.
  • Livestock breeding cooldowns are drastically reduced.
  • Shearing and milking have a chance to yield double drops.
  • Non-combat chores (mining, smelting, and crafting) award bonus experience.
  • Players swim faster, hold their breath underwater significantly longer, and wake up from sleeping with temporary speed and mining haste.

Stages of Land Corruption

As cruelty accumulates, the land deteriorates across progressively hostile tiers:

  • Low (Taint): Wild wolves become permanently hostile, attacking on sight.
  • Mild (Creeping Dark I): Buckets of milk curdle and spoil immediately upon collection or consumption.
  • Moderate (Creeping Dark II): Hostile monsters spawn in lit areas rather than just darkness, and villagers dramatically inflate trading prices.
  • High (Corrupted Wildlife): Spiders remain aggressive in broad daylight, and slaughtered livestock drop rotten flesh instead of edible meat.
  • Extreme (The Crucible): The region transforms into an open-air combat arena. Monsters spawn under direct sunlight without local population caps, frequently mutating into deadly threats like Wither Skeletons, Piglin Brutes, Baby Zombies, or rain-immune Blazes. Slaying these beasts grants massive combat XP and Overworld access to rare Nether drops (Wither Skulls, Blaze Rods). However, natural health regeneration from food saturation is disabled, forcing reliance on aggressive tactics or potions.
  • Maximum (Desolation): The land collapses under a bleeding sky. Pitch-black fog reduces visibility to a few blocks. Entering, respawning, or teleporting into the region triggers an ejection countdown; players who fail to flee in time are violently flung far outside the zone.

The Atonement Hearth & Satiety

Local corruption can be cleansed by channeling materials for a few uninterrupted seconds at a lit Atonement Hearth. Cleansing potency scales with material tier:

  • Wood Logs: Cleanses a sliver of cruelty.
  • Coal & Copper: Purges a small amount.
  • Iron: Cleanses a moderate portion.
  • Gold & Diamonds: Purges massive amounts of corruption.

Cleansing is governed by a personal Spiritual Satiety meter. Spawning or respawning fills this meter to capacity to prevent suicide-cleansing exploits. When satiety is full, further offerings are temporarily blocked. Each offering increases satiety, and the meter drains slowly over several minutes.

Dimensional Transit & Nether Debt

The Nether does not track chunk corruption. Instead, violence committed in the Nether accumulates as an invisible blood debt tied to the player. The moment you step through an Overworld portal, that accumulated debt dumps directly into your arrival zone, instantly corrupting the surrounding area up to its limit.
