The Backrooms

Enter a massive, unsettling liminal world where familiar spaces stretch far beyond where they should.

The Backrooms is an exploration and horror-focused Minecraft mod built around interconnected liminal environments, strange transitions, hidden pathways, and the constant feeling that something is just slightly wrong.

Rather than relying entirely on jumpscares, the mod focuses heavily on atmosphere, exploration, isolation, and discovering how the different areas of the Backrooms connect.

Exploration

Not every doorway leads somewhere safe.

Some entrances are obvious. Others may appear as small cracks, unusual walls, narrow passages, distorted rooms, or strange architectural features hidden inside otherwise normal locations.

Players are encouraged to explore everything.

A hallway that looks completely pointless may lead to an entirely different level.

A room you have already visited may not always feel the same when you return.

And sometimes the safest-looking path is the one you should avoid.

Liminal Horror

The goal of the mod is to create a slower style of horror.

Long stretches of exploration are intentionally quiet, giving you time to become comfortable with an area before something changes.

You may hear something in another room.

You may find evidence that someone else was there.

You may notice a hallway that was not there before.

And you may spend a very long time wondering whether you are actually alone.

Backrooms Levels

Each level is designed to have its own:

• Architecture

• Lighting

• Ambient sounds

• Structures

• Hazards

• Loot

• Entities

• Exploration mechanics

• Methods of escape

Some levels are enormous and maze-like, while others are smaller transition areas connecting much larger parts of the Backrooms.

Finding an exit does not necessarily mean you are escaping.

It may simply mean you are going deeper.

Multiplayer

The mod is designed with multiplayer exploration in mind.

Groups can explore the Backrooms together, although separating from the group can quickly become dangerous.

Depending on where you end up, finding your friends again may not be easy.

Development

The Backrooms is being built as an expanding project, with additional levels, entities, structures, mechanics, and secrets planned over time.

The goal is to create a Backrooms experience where exploration remains unpredictable even after you have spent hours inside it.
