Optifine adds dynamic lighting and glowing eyes (courtesy of the included Pablo’s Emissive Mobs resource pack) which adds a lot to the experience as well as increasing performance.

Summary:

The goal of this pack was to create a terror that comes from nightfall in Minecraft. Terror not from anything new or mysterious, but more of what regular Minecraft already offers. Zombies in greater number, with better AI, forming hordes and hunting you. These are still the same monsters your used to, same health, same attack damage, but still with much greater danger.

Oh, and the darkness. Darkness is now pitch black, hiding monsters in unknown numbers. Be sure to always have a light source with you.

I wanted to enhance the vanilla experience without making too many drastic changes. There are however a few additions which I believe make the experience much better.

Notable Additions:

Glider (Open Glider): A balanced, useful, and exciting new way to speed up travel a little.

Antique Atlas: A craftable, in game map to keep track of your entire world.

Wearable Backpacks: Balanced backpacks for extra storage on the go. (Configured to equip despite armour and be openable with a hotkey)

Gravestones: Drop on death and contain all the stuff you died with.
