Legends of the Deep

Legends of the Deep

The ocean is full of stories. The Bloop that was heard across three thousand miles. The Kraken that pulls ships under. Umi Bozu, who rises out of a dead-calm sea and asks you for a barrel. Cthulhu, asleep in the deep.

In this mod they are all real – and if you find a Sea Heart, you can become one of them.

Twenty creatures

The legends

• The Bloop – a whale-sized thing that is mostly an open mouth. Its call knocks you back and turns the world dark.
• El Gran Maja – an eel two thousand feet long, with a row of glowing eyes down each side and a mouth of long yellow fangs.
• Ningen – a smooth white shape with a face and human arms, from the cold seas.
• Umi Bozu – a black giant with nothing but two eyes. It brings a storm with it and breaks your boat.
• The Kraken – ink, tentacles that drag you in, and it smashes every boat nearby.
• The Leviathan – a sea serpent that opens whirlpools under you.
• The Sea Serpent – the one the old sailors saw, with its long red crest.
• The Loch Ness Monster – lives in rivers, and leaves you alone unless you start it.
• The Sea Eater – a mouth as tall as a tunnel, walking on long thin legs. It pulls in everything around it.
• Cthulhu – madness, cultists who rise to defend him, and a slam that shakes the sea bed.
• The Sea God – a giant with a trident and a beard of falling water. He never attacks first. Kill a sea creature near him and he will.

The ones that really lived

• Megalodon, Livyatan, Mosasaurus, Liopleurodon, Basilosaurus, Dunkleosteus, Archelon (a sea turtle the size of a boat), the Giant Squid – and the Globster, the rotting thing that washes up on the beach and then moves.

Every creature has its own model, its own painted skin and its own special power. Whales come up to breathe and blow a spout. Hunters chase real fish, and fish scatter when something big swims past.

Become one

Kill one of the giants and it may drop a Sea Heart. Right-click it and pick a creature.

• You look like it, breathe under water, swim fast, and get its strength and health.
• [ opens your powers, ] uses the one you picked.
• Bite, Grab and drag under, Smash boats, your creature’s own special – and Scare, which blacks out everyone’s screen with a roar and hurts nobody. It is for your friends.
• Sea creatures leave you alone while you are one of them.

The sea itself

• Out on deep water, things happen. A shadow the size of a ship slides under you. The sea goes dead still. Something brushes past your legs. Two eyes open in the water. Most of it cannot hurt you. Some of it can.
• Deep water gets darker the further down you go, until you cannot see the bottom at all. Specks drift past you, and a screen effect adds moving light, light shafts and the wobble of real water.
• Abyss shafts go down from the deep-ocean floor far below the normal sea bed. The biggest creatures are more common down there – and the pressure hurts, unless you carry something of the deep.
• Whale skeletons lie on the ocean floor.

Treasures

Megalodon Tooth, Kraken Tentacle, Leviathan Scale, Bloop Horn, Sea Eater Fang, Idol of Cthulhu, the Trident of the Sea God, Ancient Shell, Abyss Pearl and the Sea Heart – each with its own power.
