Reach Dial

You can reach 4.5 blocks to place one, and 3 blocks to hit something. Those two numbers decide more about how you play than they look like they should.

They are why a wall needs a pillar under its top row. They are why a floating build needs scaffolding you will only tear down again. They are why the skeleton is always one step further away than your sword, and why placing a torch on a ceiling means jumping. None of that is difficulty. It is reach.

Reach Dial puts both numbers on a dial. The defaults are 6 blocks for placing and breaking, and 4 for hitting. That is a nudge, not a cheat: still short of anywhere you would have to walk to, and enough to stop building scaffolding for a single row.

You can set either one to anything between 1 and 64.

WHAT DOES NOT CHANGE

Everything else. Same blocks, same damage, same tools, same mobs. You just do it from further away.

HOW IT WORKS

Since Minecraft 1.20.5, reach has been an ordinary attribute, exactly like health or movement speed. So this mod does the honest thing and adds a modifier to it, the same way a potion or an enchantment would.

That matters more than it sounds. Mods that instead patch the reach calculation fight every other mod that patches the same code. A modifier does not fight anything. It stacks.

There are no mixins in this mod at all.

CONFIGURATION

A plain properties file is written to your config folder on first launch:

block_reach – how far you can place and break. Vanilla is 4.5. Default 6.

entity_reach – how far you can hit something. Vanilla is 3. Default 4.

Set them to 4.5 and 3 for vanilla reach. Uninstalling leaves nothing behind: the modifier lives on the player, not in your save.

NOTES

Works in singleplayer and on servers. On a server the server’s config decides, and it applies to everyone.

No new items, no new blocks, no recipes, no commands.
