TRMT: Reimagined: terrain wears into paths along the routes you actually walk, and grows back when you stop

The line between your base and the mine is a path whether you built one or not. This makes it look like one, and lets
it fade again once you stop using it. Walk a line a few hundred times and the turf scuffs, thins, goes bald, and sinks
into a rut you can feel underfoot – eighty gradations, half a block deep at the end, drawn from each block’s own pixels
so modded ground wears in its own colors.

Built on milkucha’s The Roads More Travelled and rebuilt underneath so that nothing
is ever written into your world. One version number across every edition: 1.7.10, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 as
releases, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3 as betas – on Forge for every one of them, Fabric from 1.16.5, and NeoForge from 1.21.1.

New in 0.9.228

  • A settings screen of its own in every edition, with tabs, a search and pickers that show each block, item and mob.
No edition needs Cloth Config any more.
  • Blasts wear the ground two to five blocks past what they destroy, and the crater they leave is worn too.

Any block, in any pack

Any block, in any pack. Wear is generated from each block's own pixels, so modded ground wears in its own colors

The mod reads the block registry at startup and works out what is ground, so modded dirt, sand and stone wear without
anybody writing a list. /trmt surfaces shows what it found, and a resource pack that retextures dirt changes worn
ground too.

Twelve surface families, ten of which wear, each at its own pace: a path through fresh snow reads after two or three
crossings, grass shows its first worn step after 24 and is worn through after 1,920, and dressed stone takes 5,200
crossings.
Eleven wear looks are procedural and safe on any block at any resolution, and an in-game table draws each one on your
own blocks before you pick.

Ruts you can walk down into

Ruts you walk down into: later stages hollow out, down to eight pixels, half a block

Half a block is exactly a player’s step height, so a rut can always be climbed out of. If you would rather the ruts
were only something to look at, physicalDecay = visual gives you that.

And it grows back

Stop walking it and it comes back: recovery is a function of elapsed time, not ticks spent loaded

Recovery follows the world’s clock, so a chunk nobody has visited for two in-game months heals in one pass when it
loads, taking from six in-game days for snow to four hundred for end stone. Rain doubles it on turf, earth,
sand and gravel; a snowfall covers a path and is trodden through one layer at a time; and bone meal mends a worn
square.

Nothing is written into the world

Nothing is written into the world. The server keeps a wear record per chunk; your client paints cosmetic blocks over its own copy

The server keeps a small wear record per chunk and your client paints it. Delete the jar and every block is the block
it always was. On a server it has to be on every client as well: the server registers this mod’s blocks, and the
join handshake turns away a client that has not got them.

Tools, if you would rather not walk it

Four tiers of tamper: wear a path in where you want one, or mend one back

Tampers wear ground in, mend it back, or pin a square against both; three enchantments add reinforcement, a spawn ward
and path light. The Golem of Ways holds a stretch of road for you while you are elsewhere, with eleven upgrades, one
fitted at a time. Paths form without any of it.

The Golem of Ways: right-click a block to stand it up and it works the ground from there

For pack makers

Players, monsters, other mobs and villagers each have a switch and a multiplier for how hard they wear the ground, and
each group can be capped per chunk. Five presets cover quality, wear, healing, gradations and rut depth; quality is
client-side only, so it is safe to change on somebody else’s server. An operator can push server-owned settings to a
live server from the screen, and /trmt demonstrate realdemo builds every detected surface from untouched to fully
worn in the sky, the quickest way to judge a change against your whole pack.

a key you bind, or /trmt config.

Works well with

None of these is required; each is picked up when it is installed.

  • Settings: Cloth Config, whose screen is one button from this mod’s own; Mod Menu on Fabric.
  • Shaders and renderers: Angelica, OptiFine, Oculus, Iris, Canvas, Sodium, Embeddium and Rubidium.
  • Maps: JourneyMap, Xaero’s Minimap and World Map, VoxelMap and FTB Chunks.
  • Tooltips: Waila, Hwyla, Jade, WTHIT and The One Probe.
  • Blocks and recipes: Chisel, Rechiseled, Chipped and GregTech.
  • Quests: BetterQuesting and FTB Quests.
  • Roads: Via Romana, which charts a path you have walked as a road it can link for fast travel.

Which edition takes which is in the manual.

Questions people ask

Is this the same mod as The Roads More Travelled?
No. It is built on milkucha’s mod and carries its licence, but it is rebuilt so that nothing is written into the
world, and aimed at large packs. It has its own 1.20.1 and newer editions, but if you play 1.19 or newer, look at
the original as well – it is milkucha’s own,
actively developed for those versions, and very good.

Will it change my world?
No. Take the jar out and every block is the block it always was. Five settings can touch the world – three ship on,
because they only fire where a route has visibly formed – and each says so in its help text; the manual lists them.

Is it heavy?
Unloaded chunks cost nothing: recovery is applied in one pass when they load. The loaded sweep is sixty-four chunks
every two hundred ticks however large the world, and the client’s share has a quality preset you can turn down on
somebody else’s server.

Can I turn it off just for me?
Yes, unless the server runs ruts you can walk down into, where ground you can fall into stays visible on purpose.

Does it go online?
A server reads one small file from this mod’s GitHub repository as it starts and every eight hours, to tell whoever
can update this copy about a newer release. Nothing is sent but the request itself, and general.updateNotice = off
means it never asks.

This is a modified work: ported from Fabric 1.20.1 to Forge 1.7.10 and re-architected so that
wear is server-side data painted client-side, with a great deal added on top, and then carried to
Forge 1.12.2, to 1.16.5 on both Forge and Fabric, to 1.20.1 on both, and to 1.21.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3 on
NeoForge, Forge and Fabric. It is unofficial – not produced, endorsed or
