Hemp is one of the oldest crops people grow, and most of what it was grown for was rope, cloth, food and building material. Hempdustry 2 puts that into Minecraft the way vanilla would: a crop with three varieties, a building set, a cloth chain that can replace leather and wool, a small kitchen industry, an indoor growing setup and a resin workshop.
It’s a complete rewrite in Java. Version 2.1.0 runs on Fabric and NeoForge, for Minecraft 1.21.11 and 1.21.1, and a world from any Hempdustry 2 version opens on it with nothing to do.
What’s new in 2.1
- NeoForge. Same mod, same blocks, same numbers, now on both loaders.
- Growing indoors. A Grow Pot, a Grow Lamp, and a Hydro Tray that grows the plant twice as fast as the best field.
- Beldía, a third variety. A landrace from the Rif mountains that grows on sand by water.
- The resin workshop. A Sifting Box, an ice-water wash, and the Hemp Press. Details below.
- The Redstone Vaporizer, a gentler way to use the flowers.
- Water pipes in every colour of glass, and you can set them down on a table.
- Furniture. A Hemp Bed, a Hemp Shelf, Hemp Parquet, canvas bundles and a Hemp Harness for the happy ghast.
- A hemp leaf banner pattern and a new painting, Marley.
- 42 advancements, up from 24.
The plant
Three varieties, PpK, LHz and Beldía, which differ in shape and in what they give you. PpK is short and leafy, two blocks tall. LHz grows three blocks tall, takes longer, needs headroom, and pays out in stems where PpK pays out in leaves.

PpK turns up wild in jungles, swamps and on the moss of lush caves. LHz grows in savannas and thins out toward the badlands. Seeds also drop from tall grass and sit in a few exploration chests, so you can stumble into the mod without looking for it.
Beldía is the odd one. It’s the old landrace of northern Morocco, and it won’t grow on farmland at all: it wants sand with water close by. You’ll find it wild on desert riverbanks and shores, and its seeds in desert temples and in the suspicious sand of wells and pyramids. Its flowers are the most resinous of the three.

A growing plant can be trimmed with shears twice. Each cut hands you a leaf and moves that plant’s harvest from leaves toward flowers. Ignoring it is a perfectly good way to play. Bees pollinate hemp, parrots and chickens eat the seeds, goats eat the leaves, and the odd creeper likes to wander through a grown field, so light yours.

Growing indoors
The Grow Pot is a hemp-brick planter. Water it with a bottle, feed it bone meal, and a plant in it grows half again as fast as in a good field. Pots can be packed wall to wall.
The Grow Lamp hangs from the ceiling on copper chains and switches on like a redstone lamp. Every plant under it gets two extra flowers at harvest. The plant remembers its light, though: lose the lamp while it’s flowering and it gets stressed. A stressed plant looks it (the colour drains out and the old leaves go brown) and gives less, and its flowers can come off spoiled. The old-timers have a word for that stuff: schwag. It’s not worth much.

The Hydro Tray is the fast option. Fill it with a water bucket, add fertiliser, give it a redstone signal for the pump, and hemp grows twice as fast as the best field. A sight tube on the front shows the water level. It’s unforgiving: let it run dry and you’ll pay for it.

The resin workshop
Most of a hemp flower’s punch sits in its sticky resin glands. 2.1 adds the traditional ways of getting them off the plant, and none of them involve solvents.
- The Sifting Box is filled like a composter. Shake flowers or leaves over its screen and it hands back a fine powder. Sift that again for a cleaner grade.
- Fill the same box with water and pack ice on all four sides, and it runs an ice-water wash instead. Blue ice gives the best yield. Plain ice melts if you light the room.
- The Hemp Press is a heated screw press. It turns the powders into pressed bars, and the cleanest grade into rosin, the strongest thing in the mod. A press can pour into a chest, or into a second press.
- Shear a ripe plant and you might rub a pinch of hand-rolled resin off it, the Himalayan way. The plant stays standing.
- Coat a flower in rosin and powder and you get a moon rock.

Building and furniture
Hempcrete, plus a powder form that sets in water like concrete. Hemp bricks. A full hemp plank set: stairs, slabs, doors, trapdoors, fences, signs, hanging signs, boats with or without a chest, and now a shelf and a parquet floor. Like crimson and warped, hemp planks don’t burn.
The Hemp Bed is made from hemp wool and works like any bed, villagers included. It does burn, being wool. The Hemp Harness goes on a happy ghast. Canvas makes bundles. Put a hemp leaf in a loom and you can paint it on a banner or a shield.

Cloth and the outfit
Stems become fibre, fibre becomes canvas, canvas becomes hemp wool, and wool becomes carpet. Every step can be undone. A water cauldron rets stems into fibre at a better rate than the crafting grid. Canvas works where vanilla uses leather and hemp wool where it uses wool, so books, item frames, paintings and a bed are within reach without a cow or a sheep.

The outfit is a beanie, a shirt, harem pants and flip-flops. Since 2.1 it lasts as long as leather, the shirt and pants take dye, and the beanie keeps you out of powder snow. It still isn’t good armour.

The kitchen
A three-step chain you can watch happen. The Decarboxylator is a hemp-brick oven with three trays. A water cauldron rinses what comes out (optional, but it decides how good the batch can get). The Infuser is a tub with no fuel slot that takes its heat from whatever sits under it, and turns milk into infused butter graded on strength and quality. The butter goes into a handful of baked goods.

Plain hemp food too: toasted hemp seeds, a hemp seed bar, a bucket of hemp milk and siemieniotka, the Silesian hemp-seed soup eaten on Christmas Eve. Hemp milk works anywhere cow’s milk does.
Status effects (optional)
Some things made from the plant carry status effects. Each one is a trade-off, a buff paired with a debuff, and the stronger versions raise both. Overdo it and you lose every buff and get Nausea instead. Beldía makes you invisible for a moment. The vaporizer is the gentle option and never overdoes it.
One switch in the server config turns the whole system off and leaves a farming and building mod.
Everything else
- 42 advancements covering the whole progression. Some are worth finding on your own.
- Seven paintings, Marley the newest.
- Two music discs, Moonlight and Robadob, written for the mod by Nefuß. Creepers drop them.
- Recipe pages in JEI and REI on both loaders, and EMI on 1.21.1, including an “In the World” page for everything that has no recipe.
- Twelve languages: five English, three French, three German and Russian. The Russian translation hasn’t caught up with 2.1 yet.
For modpacks and servers
| Minecraft | Fabric | NeoForge |
|---|---|---|
| 1.21.11 | Loader 0.18.2+, Fabric API 0.139.4+ | 21.11.45+ |
| 1.21.1 | Loader 0.16.5+, Fabric API 0.105.0+ | 21.1.209+ |
Install it on both client and server. On NeoForge it needs nothing else. The 1.21.1 builds have everything except what that Minecraft version can’t hold: the Hemp Shelf, the Hemp Harness and canvas bundles.
- Settings live in
config/hempdustry.json, written with comments on first run, and/hempdustry reloadre-reads it. Crop and machine speed, the effects switch, the loot additions, the wandering creepers. - Pipes and hoppers reach every machine. The Infuser and the Hemp Press pour into anything with storage, AE2 included.
- Varieties are a datapack registry, and the Decarboxylator, Infuser and Hemp Press run on datapack recipes, so KubeJS and CraftTweaker can rebalance them. Grow beds read the shared
#c:fertilizerstag. - Addon events on both loaders.
- From 2.0.2 on, a world opens on every later version with nothing to do. No ids get renamed or removed. A world isn’t promised to move between Fabric and NeoForge.
- A client-side update notice tells you once when a newer version is out.
client.updateCheck: falseturns it off. - Putting it in a modpack is fine, monetised or not.
Coming from the old version?
Same mod, same author, rewritten from scratch. The old one was a Forge mod made with MCreator. Worlds from it don’t carry over. If you played it, the plant, the outfit and the building blocks will look familiar. Almost everything else is new.
