Class Enhancement is a extremely flexible, light-weight and high quality mod for currently 1.20.1 forge.
Each one changes a few of your stats and gives you a starting kit. Packs can add their own classes with a simple JSON file.

Classes

Browsing the classes, the preview wears each kit

Knight: more damage and a bit more health, but slower. Stone sword and a shield.
Ranged: faster, less health. Bow and 32 arrows.
Tank: lots more health and knockback resistance, slower. Iron chestplate.
Civilian: no changes. Some bread.

Your character in the middle wears the class gear, and you can drag it to turn it etc.. Hold Shift for the exact numbers.

Make your own

Drop a JSON file in config/class_enhancement/classes/ (or in a datapack under data/<namespace>/class_enhancement/class/). The file name is the class id. The mod writes a README with every field into that folder on first launch.

Items and attributes from other mods work too. If the mod isn’t installed, that line just gets skipped. Set builtInClasses to false in the config if you only want your own classes.

For mod devs

Skills and passives come through Class API. Register a skill and players press G to use it, with a small HUD box showing the cooldown. There are also events for class changes, kits and skill use, so other mods can react etc.

Good to know

The pick is permanent by default. allowReselection in the config changes that, and ops can use /class respec.
/class set, /class clear, /class open and /class list are there for ops and pack makers.
With Difficulty Enhancement installed, new worlds go difficulty first, then class. So they compliment eachother.
Client config: turn off the character preview, change menu sound volume, reduce motion, move the skill HUD etc.
